Professor Lawrie Powell AC
Professor Lawrie Powell AC is one of Queensland’s most celebrated medical researchers.
He has led international investigation into liver disease and cancer for more than 25 years. His research has made significant contributions to the understanding of inherited liver disease and cirrhosis, especially haemochromatosis.
Professor Powell was instrumental in the development of Brisbane’s new Comprehensive Cancer Research Centre at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research which will house almost 1000 scientists and support staff.
He has received numerous national and international awards in recognition of his research achievements.
Professor Powell is currently Director of Research at the Royal Brisbane Hospital and Women’s Hospital, Professor Emeritus at The University of Queensland and Honorary Senior Principal Research Fellow at the Queensland Institute of Medical Research.
